Emery – Arriving 9/6 – Taking Applications Now!

Emery – Arriving 9/6 – Taking Applications Now! Lab Mix Female About 3 months old and 10 pounds Emery was abandoned at our partner shelter in Tennessee. This shelter does everything in their power to find rescue for the dogs that come through their doors. Safe Haven Dog Rescue has committed to bringing her to Illinois to give her a second chance at love! While you foster, we pay all expenses from vetting, to food and we provide a crate, leash, collars, and toys. Your family provides love (something she desperately needs!) and a safe place to lay her head until she finds her forever home. We also require that you have the ability to take her to routine veterinary visits at our participating vets. These vets are located in Wheaton, Naperville, and Elmhurst. Spay/Neuters are done in North Aurora. Puppies have special needs and require a home where there will be someone available to care for, socialize, and train them during the day. If your family is away from the home for several hours at a time, please consider fostering an adult dog. Emery is also available for our Foster to Adopt program. This program allows you to be the family that greets her when she arrives in Illinois. Foster to Adopt families have the first option to adopt if you determine this is the pup right for...

Maybelle

Meet Maybelle! About 6 years Old Basset Hound/Beagle Mix Maybelle was abandoned at a high kill shelter in Tennessee. One of our fosters has a soft spot for Basset Hounds and knew she had to save her when she saw this sweet girl’s picture. She traveled to Illinois and has been fully vetted. Now this beautiful girl is ready for adoption and looking for a family that will love her as much as she loves them. One look into her eyes and you will be in love! She is so sweet and friendly, loving other dogs, cats and all people, definitely a people dog! It’s so cute to watch her come to you for one of her favorites, belly rubs, with a smile on her face. Even though she does like to play, she is also laid back, mellow and rarely barks. She really enjoys going on her daily walks, and true to her breed, she likes to stop and smell along the way. Although she is crate trained, she would do best with someone home most of the day, since she loves attention and hanging out with her humans. She is a young 6 year old but, she has an old soul, and would enjoy a quieter home that will give her lots of love and attention. If you are looking for a sweet, mellow girl with lots...

Canada (Tripod)

Meet Canada! Female Possibly Lab/Aussie Mix – Very Petite About 5 months old Canada came to Safe Haven from a high kill shelter in Alabama with a broken leg on July 26th. We took her to our vet here in Illinois, but her leg was so badly damaged that it had to be amputated. Do not let this deter you from meeting Canada – dogs adapt very well to only having 3 legs and who can resist that sweet face? Less than a month after her surgery, she acts like nothing is different about her! She runs, plays and takes stairs just like any other dog! She has a clean bill of health from the vet too. She loves to play with other dogs, and also cats, although cats don’t like playing with her too much! She is sooooo soft, and her two different colored eyes are just gorgeous. She loves to be loved and when you rub her chest and belly she just melts! She also snuggles into your neck when you carry her. Canada has never met an adult of child that she didn’t love! She is more than happy to spend time cuddling with you. She is gentle and happy go lucky. She also enjoys playing with her toys and chewing on her bones. If you believe that you can give her all the things in...

Samson

Meet Samson! DOB 4/23/15 Possibly Dachshund/Terrier? Mix Can you imagine abandoning eight little puppies in the summer heat in Alabama to fend for themselves? Well, it happened to these babies, and they were lucky…because that shelter tries very hard to find rescue for the dogs and puppies that enter their doors! Even after being dumped at a high kill shelter, they are sweet, loving and cuddly! We are unsure of their breed, but believe that their mom was a Dachshund mix and dad…well it’s anyone’s guess…Spaniel, Lab, ??? They are typical puppies, full of energy and mischief. They like to play with and chew on their toys and are learning what it is like to be spoiled. They have never had anyone to take care of them and they are enjoying all the attention they are getting! The families that adopt them will be very lucky! Illinois law requires that all of our dogs and puppies be spay/neutered within 30 days of adoption. In order to fully comply with this regulation and reduce the number of homeless dogs and puppies, we do not permit out of state adoptions of unaltered dogs or puppies. Puppies have special needs and require a home where there will be someone available to care for, socialize, and train them during the day. If your family is away from the home for several hours...

Alexis

Meet Alexis! Alexis is a very sweet older dog that probably gave her love to a family that abandoned her in a high kill shelter in Alabama. Senior dogs have little to know chance of getting out of these shelters, so we knew that we had to bring her to safety in Illinois. Like most seniors (including humans) she has some arthritis and her hearing is not as good as a young pup, but she has spunk and can hear. She is currently in a very loving foster home where they are learning more about her each day. They have the following to say about her: She’s housebroken, she’s great in the car, rides quietly in the back seat, and seems to really like to go for rides. She likes to go for walks, and walks well on a leash – no pulling or barking. She is fine with other dogs, although she doesn’t seem to care one way or the other if they’re there or not. She’s starting to be a little more affectionate with us – licking when we pet her – but she’s still pretty aloof. We’re pretty sure she has arthritis, but she gets around just fine, and shows no symptoms when out walking. She’s a nice little dog that will make somebody a wonderful companion! We really think that she was probably ignored...
