Vanessa

Vanessa DOB 1/10/15 Great Pyr/Aussie/Lab Mix Vanessa – AKA Nala came to us from Kentucky where she was found with her siblings matted, cold, and scared. She was adopted as a puppy to a family that ran in to some difficult times and through no fault of Vanessa’s, she needed to be returned to the rescue. Vanessa had not been socialized with many other dogs and really had no idea how to act with other dogs around. We did not have a foster home that had no other dogs, so we asked or training partners at Woofbeach to help. Without hesitation, they took her into their training program, which included going home with trainers each evening and weekend because we had no foster home. Her named was originally Nali, but the trainers at Woofbeach thought she looked more regal…so Vanessa it is! She was a star student and has been through the Woof Beach program and has passed with flying colors. She is great with people of all ages and sizes, loves children, and other dogs! One of the pictures here is at one of the trainer’s homes with his children and his dogs…she has really come a LONG way! We cannot thank Woofbeach enough for helping us in our time of need. They say she is a sweetheart that deserves to find her forever home. If you are...

The old saying ‘Opposites Attract’ couldn’t be more true in the case of Claire and Tulip! These southern bells have had very difficult pasts, before coming to rescue. They were both dealt difficult hands in life and they’re hoping someone will give them a second chance. Now they find themselves in the same foster home and have grown to become best friends. Though they are both very different, they each have something that the other needs, and together, they compliment each other very nicely. They will make the perfect duo for a family looking for a little bit of everything! Claire has a bold and friendly personality. She loves all people that she meets and is always willing to get some pets from whoever will supply them. She struggles with meeting new canine friends though, and is always ‘on guard’ when she is around dogs she doesn’t know. She is currently living with 4 other small dogs and would like to be an alpha female in her new living situation. Tulip is her best friend, they play nicely together, snuggle at night, and Tulip is just fine letting Claire be in charge! Claire has an instinctual high...

Cider

Meet Cider! DOB 9/26/2016 Rat Terrier/Hound/Chihuahua??? mix Female Currently 7 lbs. Cider and her 3 siblings were born in a high kill shelter in Alabama. Luckily, their family was rescued and transported to safety in Illinois when they were 2 weeks old. Since then they have been socialized with people, dogs and cats and they are your typical, happy, tail wagging puppies! This litter (Pumpkin, Autumn, Cider and Taffy Apple) have picked up quickly on paper training. Mom is 15 lbs so we expect they will be no more than 20 – 25 lbs full grown. Illinois law requires that all of our dogs and puppies be spay/neutered within 30 days of adoption. In order to fully comply with this regulation and reduce the number of homeless dogs and puppies, we do not permit out of state adoptions of unaltered dogs or puppies. Puppies have special needs and require a home where there will be someone available to care for, socialize, and train them during the day. If your family is away from the home for several hours at a time, please consider adopting a “teen” or adult dog. Yoshi

Meet Yoshi 3 year old Lab/bird dog mix. Yoshi is a typical teen…he has a loving personality and can be sweet as can be while having just enough mischief in him to keep you on your toes. He absolutely loves everyone he meets and will actually give you a hug! Yoshi does very well with other dogs and loves to run and play. The shelter he was in was near a gun range and this may be the reason that he is nervous during thunderstorms. He will move to the lowest portion of the house and lay as low as he can get. He often can sense that a storm is near long before it arrives. He is not destructive, just afraid. Bird dogs and Retrievers are energetic and fun loving and well suited to active homes where they can be a member of the family. He would do very well at agility! This boy is amazing, and very, very smart! We always say that a bored dog is trouble…and this boy needs mental and physical stimulation. If you are a runner, he is your boy! Yoshi needs a family that understands that he has had a ruff start to life and is willing to work with him. One of the habits that he has developed is marking in the house. This is something that can be eliminated with...

Meet Jay 7 month old Lab mix. Jay is the most awesomely lovable young adult! He is a beautiful boy who finds himself searching for a new home. He is wonderful with kids and gets along with other dogs. He has never seen a cat, so we’re not sure how he’d do with them. He is mostly housebroken, as long as he is given the chance to go out as often as he needs! He has great playful energy and like all puppies, enjoys chewing on a good bone or toy. Jay is up to date on all of his vetting and is neutered, he’s just waiting for the right family to come along! He is also available for our Foster to Adopt program. Foster to Adopt families have the first option to adopt if you determine this is the pup right for you! While you foster, we pay all expenses from vetting, to food and we provide a crate, leash, collars, and toys. Your family provides love (something he desperately needs!) and a safe place to lay his head until he finds his forever home. We also require that you have the ability to take him to routine veterinary visits at our participating vets. These vets are located in Wheaton, Naperville, Geneva and Elmhurst. Spay/Neuters are done in North Aurora. Fostering is the most life giving thing you...

Pecan and Walnut (Bonded Pair)

Pecan and Walnut Bonded Pair Young Adults Lab/Hound Mixes Meet Pecan and Walnut, a special bonded pair that are looking for a family. When Pecan and Walnut came to Safe Haven from a shelter in Alabama, they were placed in different foster homes to provide them with all the love they desperately needed. Both, although loving, were lost in these homes and became withdrawn. It was then we discovered that they are a bonded pair that have likely been together most of their lives. We had done them a disservice! Bonded dogs share truly exceptional emotional ties and communication patterns. They look to, and count on each other for company, comfort, stress relief, exercise, shared play, social signals, coping skills and trust building. They develop routines with each other — often, very funny ones! Because they share so much "insider info" with each other, and have become "two sides of the same coin," and they need to remain together. If you think that that having two companion animals is always double the work, think again! Adopting a pair of pals can end up being less work: Many destructive behaviors are due to boredom or separation anxiety. A built-in, long time, playmate naturally provides the stimulation and security needed to reduce the potential for neurotic behaviors to develop. It can also alleviate concerns about leaving a companion animal and the...

He is quick to learn and understands sit and no very well. The world is a new place to him so he is a little afraid but once he experiences something a few times he overcomes the fear. He loves to be be outside and go on walks. We are walking 1 mile 3 times a day and he would be happy to do more and would be a great dog to run or jog with. He is working on his manners and has a lot to learn. He has mixed feelings about other dogs so a meeting with any other animals in a house would be needed. Because he loves to jump up and give hugs and kisses, his best home would be one without small children. He is not very fond off men and we are working on that fear. He is a very affectionate dog that is motivated by food and attention. He will be a constant companion giving lots of love. He feels safe in a crate and does not mind being left for the day. We are working on house and crate training and appropriate places for taking care of business. He loves to play...
